Overall, if you love the high school bully trope, you should definitely give this a try. We only really get the prologue and that's it and we're supposed to believe they had this whole tension build up between them before Thayer went away for a year. I will say that I think more flashbacks between Thayer and Shayne before things ruined their relationships would have made the connection between them more understandable to the reader. I did also like how there was a mystery over what had happened in this past a year ago and how that all came to light at the end. When things became more intimate, Shayne was giving consent and they were genuinely into each other. I really enjoyed how we got a genuine answer for why Thayer was being mean to Shayne and how he didn't do anything that was not consensual or unforgivable. I would say the latter 50% of the book made this a 4 star read instead of a 3 star read for me. However, when we got to about the halfway mark and Thayer started to talk about his emotions more, I was really hooked on this book. I have been having a really hard time enjoying high school bully romances lately and I don't know if it's me or that genre is just becoming too overdone at this point. ![]() ![]() I felt like we had every high school bully romance cliche thrown at us and I, at this point, didn't really care. ![]() But when I started this book, it was really hard for me to get into. ![]() ![]() He tells of the persimmon tree that the General climbed but could not descend the irate farmer who upbraided Jackson for crossing his field the lemon that Stonewall sucked all during the battle at Cold Harbor. In a resonant prose almost unique among soldiers and rare among writers, he wrote as simply and intimately of history as though it were a jovial anecdote, spun out after dinner for the entertainment of his friends. During and shortly after the war he set down his experiences of great men and great days. ![]() ![]() ![]() He rode with Stonewall he fought by the model of the incomparable Ashby he lived, joked, and courted with Jeb Stuart.įrom his meeting with John Brown, alias Isaac Smith, shortly before the Brown Raid, through the long, bitter years of the Civil War, he clung to the Southern cause, fought its battles, and endured its defeats. For example, the first group, immediate, is simply whatever occurred at the time of the event. ![]() 1 Thereby, this distinction groups events contextually and explains the events’ relevance. When doing so, an important distinction to make is “the distinction between the immediate, the intermediate, and the distant”. Gaddis argues that it is important when writing or thinking about history to consider the context that led to an event. One of Gaddis’ main points in this book is focused on the importance of causation. By using relevant modern examples, Gaddis is able to argue against forms of social science while promoting different forms of historical thinking. This book is a combination of writings and lectures performed by Gaddis. In this book, Gaddis argues against multiple fields of social sciences while providing insight to historians about stronger research and analysis methods. Motivated to display the importance of historical consciousness, Gaddis wrote the book The Landscape of History. John Lewis Gaddis is a professor of history at Yale University, the recipient of multiple writing awards and a distinguished author. ![]() ![]() ![]() NB All our estimates are based on business days and assume that shipping and delivery don't occur on holidays and weekends. One aspect that I loved is that many of my favorite secondary characters are back in action. In a previous installment, we have some scary black magic-practicing witches, and in this book, we have creepy eyeless characters and spider-like fae that lay eggs in their victims’ skin. The book was honestly on the upper limit of my creepiness level, but it added to the suspense in the series. ![]() Briggs seems to introduce more horror elements into this series as it continues. ![]() One piece that stood out to me is that Ms. Just based on this context, I knew we were in for an action-packed, creepy ride.
